Use your Heat Pump smartly & how to guides

A cold snap like the one felt in August 2011 ensures that your heat pump’s true performance is tested! Judging by how quiet our call centre was, our heat pumps are doing their job for you - because this is the kind of weather we design for!
Operating your Heat Pump in Extreme Conditions – FAQ’s
We have researched some frequently asked questions about heat pumps and given you some tips to ensure that you get the most out of your heat pump in any conditions.
I PUT MY HEAT PUMP TEMPERATURE UP TO 30°C SO THAT IT HEATS UP THE HOUSE FASTER, BUT IT JUST BLOWS OUT COLD AIR – WHY IS THIS?

This is a common misconception; by putting your heat pump up to 30°C it will have to run harder and use more power. It will also go into defrost mode more frequently trying to warm up (see more about defrost mode below). This is because the difference between the set temperature and the outdoor temperature is too large. The ideal temperature your heat pump should be set to upon initial start up is between 20°C and 22°C.

WHY IS MY HEAT PUMP TURNING OFF?

When the outdoor temperature is very cold, your heat pump will go through defrost cycles occasionally. All heat pumps must do this to ensure that the outdoor unit does not freeze up and it can continue to operate efficiently. A sign of this is the indoor unit fan turning off and the vane going into a horizontal position, this is usually for somewhere between 3 and 5 minutes. Your heat pump has not turned off, it will automatically return to normal operation when the defrost cycle is complete. Do not adjust operation with the remote control or turn the unit off, as this can restart the defrost cycle. A correctly sized heat pump with good low temperature performance will have fewer defrost cycles and optimised heat output.

HYPERCORE HEAT PUMPS – WHY DO THEY WORK BETTER THAN ORDINARY HEAT PUMPS IN COLD CLIMATES?

HyperCore Heat Pumps are guaranteed to deliver their rated capacity (full heat output) down to an outdoor temperature of -15°C. They are the only heat pump on the market able to deliver this level of performance. Due to what we call the “air off” coil temperature being higher than a standard heat pump as well as other unique features, it is also able to heat up your room faster.

HyperCore Heat Pump will still go into defrost mode. The benefit of HyperCore being designed to deliver its full heat when the outdoor temperature is so low, is that the run time between defrost cycles will be extended. The time spent in defrost is also significantly reduced. This means you get more heat, for longer.

HOW DO I ENSURE I GET THE BEST PERFORMANCE OUT OF MY HEAT PUMP?
  1. Correct temperature setting: 22°C is a comfortable living temperature for your home; it will also ensure you get the best performance from your heat pump. Save yourself power usage and get a good sleep by setting your heat pump at around 18°C overnight, studies have shown that this is the ideal temperature for sleep. It will also ensure that your heat pump will have less work to do when the cool morning hits!
  2. Timers: A 7-Day Timer is a useful, energy saving function which allows up to four settings (per 24-hour period) including start/stop operation and temperature changes. This ensures higher comfort levels when you are home and energy reduction when you are not - saving you both time and money.
  3. Close all doors to the room that is to be heated: Don’t open hallway or adjoining room doors during colder periods. High Wall heat pumps are usually sized to heat one room only. This additional load created by having to bring a whole house up to the set temperature will increase the number of times it goes into defrost mode.
  4. Make sure the outdoor unit is in free airflow: it is very important that the unit that sits outside your home is not covered or obstructed i.e. make sure that air is able to pass freely to the unit. Common obstructions include; foliage, wood or snow. Your heat pump should not be boxed in, while some may like to obscure the outdoor unit from view, they do this at the price of efficiency.
